Willakenzie
Lavender is the lavender business Debbie Gorham and Bob Applegate
are building just outside of Yamhill, Oregon right in the heart
of wine country. Much of the soil type on their 20 acres is 'willakenzie'
type soil; hence the business name. Beautiful, panoramic views surround
their home along with rose and perennial gardens which are connected
by footpaths. Visitors are encouraged to tour the gardens. Many
different cultivars of beardless irises and roses are featured in
the landscape.
Just beyond the landscape is an extensive lavender display bed for
visitors to enjoy as well. In the lavender fields you will find
large plantings of the following lavender varieties: Royal Velvet,
Gros Bleu, Provence, Grosso, and Maillette. There are close to 4000
plants in the ground now, with plans to add several thousand more
over the next few years.
Willakenzie Lavender specializes in growing Lavandula angustifolia,
also known as 'true lavender' or English lavender. It is the most
sweetly scented of the lavenders, and the essential oil is used
in aromatherapy and personal care products. At Willakenzie Lavender,
bath and body care products, as well as culinary lavender products
are handcrafted using estate grown lavender. Products are available
through special order, or in the farm store on weekends during the
summer months.
Bob and Debbie
have also just begun raising and showing huacaya and suri alpacas.
This new business, "Velveteen Alpacas", aims to produce
healthy, top quality alpacas that produce top quality fleece. The
new barn was built in 2006 and is home to the alpaca herd and the
new farm store. Open Friday, Saturday, and Sundays from 10 am to
5 pm, June 15th to September, both lavender and alpaca products
are for sale, including yarn made from their own alpacas. "U-Pick"
lavender begins as soon as the lavender buds begin to open. Also
available by appointment - call 503-662-4297 if you'd like to schedule
a visit.
